Psychological trauma in childhood affects mental and physical health later in life

Think differently when it comes to childhood trauma. This recent study showed that psychological trauma in childhood can lead to both psychiatric and physical problems many years afterward. The researchers came to this conclusion after spending years monitoring the health of children exposed to mass trauma of the "9/11" bombings in New York city. This means that clinicians treating persons with a history of childhood psychological trauma should note that this negative experience may explain the person's physical or psychiatric illness years after the trauma. This is one more reason to protect children from war, internal displacement, physical abuse and other forms of psychological trauma.
