
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the major forms of dementia, and is linked to accumulation of an abnormal protein called beta-amyloid in the brain. Sleep is one way to counter this. During sleep, the brain essentially washes itself. So, persons who get a lot of restful, high-quality sleep (REM), tend to have lower levels of beta amyloid protein, which is good news for the brain.
