As countries begin to ease lockdowns, many are mandating the use of face coverings when physical distance cannot be maintained. When there is a shortage of medical face masks (surgical mask and N95 mask), homemade face coverings are a viable alternative in the community.
If home-made mask will be used, experts recommend very breathable fabric, such as T-shirt materials. Such materials typically have low droplet resistance and increased capacity to block off droplets when used in double-layer, even exceeding the blocking efficiency of medical masks.
They also found that these doubled-layered home-made masks were more breathable than medical masks – home-made masks made with 100 percent cotton were more breathable than medical masks even with three layers.
