What is Polio?

Polio is a disease caused by the poliovirus, which attacks the brain and the nerves.

In most people, it causes mild or no symptoms, while in others, it may cause paralysis or death.

Poliovirus is highly contagious. It spreads through contact with infected faeces, and it is also transmissible via respiratory droplets from an infected person.

Children under 5 years are the most vulnerable group to contract this disease.
