The largest genomic study on the subject (nearly 275,000 people) has revealed genes associated with heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder (AUD), the uncontrollable pattern of alcohol use commonly referred to as alcoholism. This is important because persons at risk for these disorders may one day be diagnosed through genetic testing, which will allow early intervention to prevent bad outcomes.
