Some Recovery is Possible After Vision Loss From a Stroke

Vision loss is an unfortunate complication of strokes affecting the visual cortex of the brain. The so-called cortical blindness is widely believed to be progressive and permanent. However, recent evidence is revealing that partial visual recovery can be achieved following such stroke, though this may require lengthy visual training.

The study authors evaluated the natural course of visual loss in patients that have had stroke between 2011 and 2019 and found that spontaneous partial recovery was seen in many patients. However, after 6 months recovery stalled.

The researchers also noted that visual training was useful for recovery from stroke-related cortical blindness, but the best time for benefit is before the 6 month mark. This means that early visual training may help retain some visual abilities and potentially reverse blindness.
