Marijuana Use in Pregnancy may Cause Sleep Problems in Children

The study is coming at a time when more and more pregnant women are consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes, for some, as a way of reducing morning sickness.

For the study, the researchers analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Of the 700 moms who were found to have used marijuana while pregnant, 184 used it daily and 262 used it twice or more daily. After considering other risk factors such as race, parental socioeconomic status, and education, a clear pattern was found: mothers who reported frequent use of marijuana reported sleep problems in their children, such as trouble sleeping and trouble waking up in the morning.

The study team hopes these findings would dissuade pregnant women from use of psychoactive substances, including cannabis.
