Jaundice in a newborn

Jaundice in a newborn

WHY IS JAUNDICE COMMON WITH NEWBORNS?
Jaundice is a common problem in newborns. It happens when the yellow pigment in their skin, eyes and urine is released from their cells into the bloodstream, giving them a yellowish appearance.

It is caused by an accumulation of bilirubin, a yellowish pigment, in the bloodstream.

One of the reasons jaundice occurs in newborns is because their liver might not have the ability to remove excess bilirubin, as it is still immature.

Most times, it usually resolves on its own, but as soon as you notice yellowness in your child's eyes or face, please speak to your doctor.
