Genetics Influences Risk of Liver Damage Among Heavy Alcohol Drinkers

Alcohol is one of the leading causes of liver cirrhosis around the world. Research has previously shown that certain genes increase the risk of developing liver cirrhosis among heavy drinkers and another gene is protective. Now, there is new evidence that another gene (FAF2) may be protective. The genes that influence risk of liver cirrhosis from alcohol affect how the body metabolizes fat. So, if you know someone who drinks a lot of alcohol and is healthy, don’t assume you can do the same. We have different genetic compositions. Alcohol should be taken in moderation if taken at all.
