Evaluating memory is a collective responsibility

In one survey, only one in seven seniors received a regular assessment for memory and thinking (or “cognitive”) troubles though more received assessments for other common health issues. Interestingly, seniors assumed the doctor would initiate the discussion about cognitive health while doctors felt the opposite and waited for patients or family members to initiate the discussion. Since memory problems are reversible if the underling cause is treated, early diagnosis is important. Overall, initiating the discussion about memory is a collective responsibility. If your doctor does not bring it up, ask them about it.
