
Ceftriaxone is still the "go-to" drug for treatment of gonorrhea. However, resistance to cefriaxone is now well documented and could become widespread. In this new study, gentamicin (given in combination with azithromycin) was effective in the majority of persons who had gonorrhea that was resistant to ceftriaxone. Early and effective treatment of gonorrhoea is important to avoid complications, which in women can include fertility problems.
