Dealing with Unexpected Events: 6 Strategies for Navigating Life's Surprises

“Alex lost his job 4 days ago and it was a total surprise to him! Before then, he had been expecting a promotion. But in a round of downsizing that blind-sided most of the employees, Alex lost his job. He’s losing his mind, he doesn’t know what to do.”

Life is full of unexpected events that can range from joyful surprises to challenging crises. Unexpected events are situations or occurrences that deviate from our plans or expectations. They can be positive, such as receiving a job promotion or discovering a new-found passion, or negative, such as a sudden job loss, a health scare, a relationship breakup, or a global pandemic. Regardless of their nature,  unexpected events can disrupt our routines, shake our sense of stability, and test our resilience. They also trigger emotional responses such as shock, disbelief, sadness, hope, fear, anxiety, or excitement.

When faced with these unexpected events, what do we do? Here are six strategies we can use when dealing with unexpected events.

Acknowledge your feelings: When you are placed into unexpected situations, you experience a wide range of emotions, whether negative or positive. You might be tempted to suppress or ignore those emotions but a better approach is allowing yourself to experience and process your emotions without judgement. Recognize that it's normal to feel a range of emotions in response to unexpected events.

Seek support: Support from loved ones can make it easier to navigate trying times. Reach out to friends, family members, or any other trusted support system for  comfort, advice, and the chance to talk about how you really feel.

Focus on what you can control: Identify aspects of the situation that are within your control and focus on them instead. This helps to restore a sense of agency and control. If you stay stuck on things you can’t control, you may feel helpless and like a bystander to the events in your life.

Change your perspective: The way you view the events that happen to you or around you play a strong role in how you handle it.  Remind yourself that challenges are a natural part of life. Even though the present situation feels overwhelming, it will pass and may even lead to unexpected opportunities. A positive perspective can help reduce anxiety and build resilience.

Find ways to manage stress: Unplanned events bring a lot of stress, both mental and physical. Stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help to reduce stress and promote emotional well-being during times of uncertainty. Activities such as exercising, eating healthy, and getting adequate sleep are also helpful during these moments.

Learn from the experience: Reflect on the unexpected event. What did you learn from it? What did it teach you about yourself? What would you do or not do next time?  Take it as an opportunity for personal growth and learning. Consider what lessons you can take away from the experience to help you navigate future challenges more effectively.
