Better blood pressure control benefits the brain and more in the elderly

When taking medication for high blood pressure, the pressure needs to be well controlled to get the most benefit. Elderly people on treatment for high blood pressure who had a tight control and kept their 24-hour systolic blood pressure around 130 mm Hg for three years showed significantly less accumulation of harmful brain lesions compared with those whose blood pressure remained around 145 mm Hg on treatment.

Intensive blood pressure control also benefited the heart. Those whose blood pressure was not tightly controlled were four times as likely to suffer a major non-fatal heart-related event compared with those in the intensive treatment group. Is your blood pressure adequately controlled?
