A team of researchers sought to compare the behavior and academic performance of college students with low alcohol use with those with heavy alcohol consumption. They sent an anonymous survey to the college students to report on their frequency of alcohol use, as well as their sleep patterns, academic performance, and attitude toward learning.
After comparing gender responses, the study authors found that young men and women exhibited similar behavioral responses to heavy alcohol consumption; however, they found a big difference in cognitive functions between young men and women who consumed large amounts of alcohol. Furthermore, the survey findings showed that young women reported less interest in academic work and lower academic performance than young men, although the latter reported more risky behaviors from heavy drinking.
The researchers suggest that the differences in cognitive responses to heavy drinking between men and women may be because of the structural differences between their brains.
