Question: Is COVID coronavirus sexually transmitted?
Answer: There is no evidence that COVID coronavirus is transmitted through semen or vaginal secretion. However, physical separation of about 6 feet or 2 meters, that is recommended to prevent transmission of coronavirus from one person to another, is not maintained during sex. Therefore, COVID coronavirus can be transmitted during the sex act through droplets from coughing, sneezing, touching of the face with contaminated hands, kissing and so on.
There have been many other coronaviruses before the current COVID coronavirus. The earlier coronaviruses are not transmitted through semen or vaginal secretion. It is reasonable to think COVID coronavirus is the same as the earlier coronaviruses.
The protein that COVID coronavirus uses to enter human cells (ACE2) is present in testes. This does not mean that the virus can get into semen and be passed from one person to another. We have to keep fingers crossed until scientists have conducted research to answer this question.
While COVID coronavirus is not considered a traditional sexually transmitted disease (STD) like gonorrhea or chlamydia, this COVID period is not the time to get a new sex partner.
COVID coronavirus can be transmitted from one person to another only if one of the persons has the infection. If both persons are COVID-free, the risk of transmission is zero. This takes us back to SOCIAL DISTANCING, HAND HYGIENE, NOT TOUCHING THE FACE and STAYING HOME WHEN SICK as important actions to limit the spread of COVID coronavirus.
