After Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease dementia are some of the most common types of dementia. Abnormal protein deposits are often present in the brains of affected persons. The symptoms and signs of these dementias differ in subtle ways. In Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss is the main symptom while Parkinson’s disease dementia starts with movement problems followed by memory loss. In Lewy body dementia, it is the other way around.
The new drug that will be tested is for Parkinson’s disease dementia. Parkinson’s disease dementia is sometimes more challenging for caregivers because the patient may have psychiatric symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. The results are eagerly awaited.
