Although there are standard antibiotic treatments for gonorrhea, this species of bacteria has grown increasingly resistant to these antibiotics. Investigations about the antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea have spurred scientists to discover new antibiotics that can potentially treat the bacteria much more effectively.
A group of researchers found that genetic changes within the bacteria were responsible for the growing difficulty in treating the infection. The study team said the genetic changes involved an essential protein that affects how the antibiotic attaches itself to the microbe in order to kill it. While the mutation does not directly block this process, it distorts the attachment site so the antibiotic cannot work against the microbe.
Armed with this new information, scientists are pursuing newer and more effective treatment options for the infection. Meanwhile, remember that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
