
In the study, pregnant mothers who smoked increased the risk of childhood asthma in their babies by more than 1.5 times. This risk was much higher in those who have underlying respiratory problems.
The study, which involved 5,200 individuals born in Northern Finland in 1966, shows that babies in the womb have delicate airways, and damage can be done to a child’s lungs even before they are born. Pregnant women should avoid passive or active smoking to protect their unborn children.
