Signs of Adult-Onset Diabetes May be Obvious in Childhood

Early signs of being prone to type 2 diabetes in adulthood may be seen in children as young as 8 years old.

The research evaluated the effects of a genetic risk score for developing type 2 diabetes in adulthood using blood tests done at age 8, 16, 18, and 25 years. The study enrolled more than 4,000 children in the 90s who were free of diabetes or any other chronic disease and followed them to see if they developed diabetes.

The results demonstrated that in children prone to diabetes in adulthood, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is the good type of cholesterol, was reduced at age 8, while the low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol – the bad type – was raised. In addition, amino acids and inflammation were also elevated at age 16 and 18, suggesting that markers of diabetes onset can be identified well before adulthood.

Let’s not forget that diabetes is preventable. Adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle measures can help to lower the risk and avoid a diagnosis of diabetes.
