A novel approach to cancer immunotherapy developed at Mount Sinai is capable of turning cancer on itself. The technique involves injecting immune stimulants directly into a tumor to teach the immune system to destroy the tumor and all traces of the cancer anywhere in the body.
“The in situ vaccine approach has broad implications for multiple types of cancer,” said lead author Joshua Brody, MD. The technique has shown promise in studies using mice and in a few patients. Plans are underway to investigate it further.
