A team of researchers have designed a new fertility test for men to predict which men will need treatment and which couples might have success with different forms of fertility treatments. The test, called the Cap-Score test is designed to provide details about a man’s fertility that they never had.
The Cap-Score quantifies the ability of sperms to undergo a process that enables sperms to fertilize an egg, a process called capacitation. Traditional sperm tests rely on seminal fluid analysis that evaluates sperm counts, motility, and activity. The limitation of these tests is that although it tells the volume of sperms in an ejaculate, and the proportion of those sperms that are normal and motile, they do not show the amount of sperms that are capable of fertilizing an egg. The Cap-Score tells this.
The researchers compared results of the Cap-Score test with the traditional semen analysis tests and found that more than 60 percent of those who had low Cap-Scores passed the traditional semen analysis test. This suggests that the Cap-Score test may be a superior measure of a man’s fertility.
