Loneliness in Children Could Lead to Depression in Later Life

The review examined the potential impacts of social isolation and coronavirus lockdown measures on the mental health of young people, and found that social isolation in young people may increase their risk of depression and anxiety long after the episode of social isolation.

The research draws upon over 60 pre-existing, peer reviewed studies that border on the mental health effects of isolation and loneliness in young people aged 4 to 21. According to the findings, young people who are lonely are more than three times more likely to develop depression in the future, and that this effect could last for at least 9 years.
