LIGHT PHYSICAL EXERCISE OFFERS PROTECTION FOR PEOPLE WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME

According to a new study from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, light physical exercises reduce the risk of heart disease or metabolic syndrome-related diseases in both men and women. Metabolic syndrome alters how the body functions and has been linked to cholesterol problems, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, among other things.

In the study, 3693 participants filled in detailed questionnaires about their lifestyle, reported their physical exercise, and underwent physical examination and blood tests. The participants were followed for up to 20 years.

Individuals with metabolic syndrome who were physically active at the start of the study had a lower risk of developing or dying from heart or related diseases as well as other diseases when compared to individuals with the metabolic syndrome who were less physically active. A motivating part of the findings is that even light exercise had protective effects on individuals with metabolic syndrome.
