Kidney disease tied to higher cancer risk

Having unhealthy kidneys leads to retention of waste products, and has been associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease, anemia, and bone fractures, among other health problems. Some researchers have now uncovered evidence suggesting a modestly higher cancer risk in individuals with mild to severe long-lasting kidney disease. The cancers were mainly some forms of skin cancer and cancer of the urinary/genital system. While additional research is needed to confirm and better understand the association reported, it is prudent to avoid things that can damage the kidneys such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, and over-use of some pain medications.
