Immune Cells for Rare, Polio-Like Disease Identified

A team of researchers from the US recently isolated antibodies that can bind to the virus to prevent it from damaging nerve cells. The researchers isolated antibody-producing blood cells from children who had previously been infected by the virus, and fused the blood cells with fast-growing bone cells. This generated a panel of antibodies that could neutralize the virus when tested in the laboratory.

In further animal studies, the study team found that the antibodies protected mice from respiratory and nerve damage before or after infection by the virus.

The research team was elated by these results and hope that the findings could lead to more effective therapeutic and preventive interventions against this debilitating condition.
