How does lowering salt intake improve blood pressure? Research catches up with doctors’ recommendation

Cut down the sodium (or salt) in your diet. That’s the advice that doctors give all over the world to persons with high blood pressure. How this intervention leads to better blood pressure has however been a relative mystery. Now some researchers may have discovered an underlying mechanism., though it still needs confirmation in larger studies. Basically, they showed that lowering salt intake led to higher blood levels of two metabolites – beta-hydroxyisovalerate and methionine sulfone – in tandem with a modest drop in blood pressure. Do these two metabolites play a direct or indirect role in lowering blood pressure? We’ll learn more, hopefully soon. Meanwhile, follow a low sodium diet if you have high blood pressure
