Discovery could lead to new malaria treatments

New research findings may lead to new treatments for combating drug-resistant malaria, as well as boost existing drugs. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

The research team looked at PfCRT, a protein that is pivotal to multidrug resistance in the malaria parasite and is also itself a promising drug target. The research shows PfCRT can be inhibited by drugs, indicating its natural function is a ‘druggable’ target, as well as paving the way for the design of novel therapies.

There were an estimated 405,000 malaria deaths in 2018.
