Any Exercise Can Lower Risk of Heart Disease in Obese and Overweight Adults

Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases, including heart disease. This is why healthcare professionals recommend regular exercise to reduce one’s weight to lower the risk. However, a new study has found that any physical activity – regardless of amount and method – can lower an individual’s 10-year risk of heart disease if the person is obese or overweight.

The study revealed that any amount of exercise can lower the risk of heart disease by as much as half in obese or overweight adults. A body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 is described as overweight and a BMI greater than 30 is obese. A BMI value between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal.

The study examined data from more than 22,000 people aged 30 to 64 over a 10-year period between 2007 and 2016. About one-third of these people were overweight, another third were obese, and the final third had normal BMI. The researchers evaluated the risk of heart disease in all three groups over the period with self-reported levels of physical activity.

The results showed that people who exercised for at least 10 minutes at a time had a 34 percent drop in the risk of heart disease and those who engaged in at least 150 minutes a week had a 50 percent lower risk of heart disease
