Acute Malnutrition can be treated at a Much Lower Cost

The team tested a protocol for treating malnutrition in children under the age of 5 years and above 6 months in Kenya and South Sudan. Using a single therapeutic intervention, they showed similar recovery pattern as the standard approach – and it saved $123 per child.

More than 4,000 children were enrolled in the study between May 2017 and March 2018, half of these were given the standard treatment and the other half received the combined protocol treatment.

Furthermore, for both groups of children, no difference was seen in the number of deaths, children who did not respond to treatment and children who were transferred to another facility for further treatment.
