86 Percent of COVID-19 Cases in Africa Go Unnoticed - WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that about 86 percent of all coronavirus cases in Africa go unnoticed. According to the agency’s Regional Director for Africa MatshidisoMoeti, health facilities in the continent are limited by inadequate testing capacities, making 8 out of 10 cases go undetected.

Moeti noted that just 70 million COVID-19 tests have been reported on the continent of more than 1.3 billion people. According to the WHO, countless number of people with COVID-19 symptoms do not often go for testing and are, thus, undiagnosed.

The WHO puts the number of all infections on the continent at 59 million, more than seven times the eight million cases reported in the continent.

This comes as a call to governments and health authorities in the continent to revamp COVID-19 screening and testing capacities, to ensure cases are detected early and further spread of the virus curbed.
