Cleft lip and palate is the second most common birth defect in the world, and is most likely the result of a combination of genetics and environment. The exact cause, however, remains somewhat of a mystery. Some researchers have put together a part of the puzzle by identifying genes that may play a role to the development cleft palate and lip. The more we know, the greater the likelihood that we will one day have good ways to prevent and treat this condition
