Obesity and diabetes rate are increasing worldwide. Diet and ingredients in common foods are some of the potentially modifiable factors to lower the risks for obesity and diabetes.

Early results from this study point to propionate, a common ingredient in baked goods, animal feeds, and artificial flavorings, as a potential culprit. The researchers found an association between proprionate and higher levels of several hormones that may contribute to obesity and diabetes. More research is needed to verify this.
