Maternal instinct is linked to the “love hormone”, oxytocin

Maternal instinct is easily recognizable by watching a mother love her baby and respond to perceived danger. The source of maternal instinct is however something of a mystery. Researchers have now found evidence that maternal instinct may be linked to oxytocin which is also called the love hormone. They found that cells in a part of brain of female mice that affects emotion responded to oxytocin but this was not seen in the brain of male mice. This discovery could be the biological explanation for maternal instinct and may explain the depression that some mothers experience after childbirth called postpartum depression
