A research team recently set out to shed light on the popular belief in the ‘sugar rush’, by examining whether consuming sugar actually improves mood. After crunching the results from numerous studies conducted in adults, the team concluded that the idea of a ‘sugar rush’ is a myth, noting that:

  • sugar consumption has no effect on mood
  • if anything, consuming sugar can lead to tiredness and decreased alertness
