Nanofilter innovation by African scientist shows promise in the fight against water borne diseases
Dr. Askwar Hilonga is a Tanzanian scientist who has developed a low-cost water filtration system based on nanotechnology. This innovation is now being rolled out in parts of Tanzania in collaboration with Tanzania's health authorities. The Arusha community in Northern Tanzania where the filtration system is being piloted had no cholera outbreak during the cholera season. Water-borne infections remain a major cause of sickness and death in Africa. Affordable technological innovations by committed African scientists like Dr. Hilonga have the potential to save millions of lives from these preventable infections.
