The first study has emerged that confirms that SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, cannot be transmitted via mosquito bites.
This comes amid several conspiracies that have swept through the media as the coronavirus pandemic spreads from country to country. Many people had expressed concerns that mosquitoes could spread the virus from person to person. In the study, titled “SARS-CoV-2 failure to infect or replicate in mosquitoes: an extreme challenge,” the research team noted that the virus is unable to replicate in three common species of mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus, which are widely distributed.
The study, which was conducted at the Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI), a biosafety level-3 facility. The World Health Organization (WHO) had earlier reported that mosquitoes cannot spread the virus.
