A lot is still unknown about the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, even as the world grapples with the resulting pandemic. While numerous studies have been unraveling the mode of transmission, natural course, and complications of this disease, there has been little clarity on the risks of COVID-19 to the unborn child.
Emerging research suggests there are potential risks of COVID-19 to a pregnant woman and the growing fetus. In one study, researchers revealed evidence of transmission of the virus from a pregnant woman to the growing fetus, also called vertical transmission. Furthermore, the study team suggested that the growing body of evidence on the possibility of vertical transmission should inform public health measures aimed at curbing sickness and deaths from the infection.
